A Unique Approach to Saving Wildlife
The presence of wildlife in our world is a treasure, one that we will never be able to reclaim if it disappears.
Wildlife around the world is increasingly threatened. Historically, one out of every one million species became extinct each year; since the Industrial Revolution in the mid-1800’s, this rate of extinction has increased rapidly. Recent studies have shown that rates of extinction are currently 10 to 100 times higher than normal and that the world is on the brink of a sixth mass extinction, the first since the time of the dinosaurs.
WCN was built on the premise that one person can truly make a difference for wildlife. Independent wildlife conservationists have the power to ensure a future for wildlife by developing new solutions and working closely with communities to save endangered animals. In order to succeed, these wildlife heroes need funding to run their programs and assistance to build their organizations and ensure their efforts are scalable and sustainable. WCN partners with leading independent wildlife conservationists, providing them with an array of services and training in areas such as marketing, accounting, and strategic planning. WCN also creates connections to donors who can make these conservationists’ work possible.

Saving wildlife requires the courage to pioneer new approaches and the commitment to work in remote, wild places. We believe that investing in the individuals who are willing to take on these challenges is the best hope for wildlife. These “conservation entrepreneurs” try new action-oriented strategies for conservation. They have started their own organizations, and taken chances to do so. At WCN we find the best and brightest of these conservation entrepreneurs and, after a rigorous application and review process, invite a select few to join our network as Conservation Partners. WCN then invests heavily in our Partners and their organizations so that they can have a real and lasting impact on the future of wildlife.
A Community Approach
Local people who live among wildlife will determine the future of these animals, and are at the heart of wildlife conservation solutions. Our Conservation Partners work with communities to understand their needs and jointly develop solutions to allow people and endangered animals to live together. Community-based programs allow people to thrive alongside the wild animals with which they share a home. These programs find ways in which wild animals can have economic benefits to the community, provide alternative sources of income or skills training to local people, devise new ways of reducing human-wildlife conflict, and support education.
We are highly collaborative and work with many NGOs, conservationists, governmental agencies and individual donors. Our fourteen Conservation Partners make up the core of our network. They are joined by promising young scholars whose studies are supported by the WCN Scholarship Program, conservationists featured at our annual Wildlife Conservation Expo as guest speakers, other conservation organizations, and wildlife conservation supporters. We are committed to making the best connections possible across this widespread and diverse group, which is united by a common passion for saving endangered animals. Through the network, donors are able to play an active part in conservation.
100% Donation Model
You can help save a specific WCN-supported endangered species by designating your donation to that animal. We guarantee that 100% of a designated donation will be sent to the field for use in conserving the species on the ground. We can implement this 100% donation model thanks to visionary donors who are committed to helping us carry out our mission by supporting WCN’s operating costs. These donors help us cover everything from staff salaries, the services and trainings that help conservationists succeed, and even the wire fees charged when we send money to our Conservation Partners in the field.
At WCN we focus on efficiency and effectiveness so that every dollar donated has the greatest impact on wildlife conservation. 90% of all funds donated to WCN are used to support our programs in the field, one of the metrics that earned WCN a four-star designation by Charity Navigator. These dollars are either sent directly to our Conservation Partners or are used to fund the training and conservation support that we provide to help conservationists grow their organizations.
We identify, qualify, and then invest in the growth and development of leading independent wildlife conservationists around the world.
WCN gives donors the unique opportunity to get to know the conservationists they support through events, field visits and firsthand updates on their work.
We focus on efficiency to maximize the impact of your donation. Donors are able to decide where their dollars go by directing donations to a specific species.
