Amazon Freshwater Fish

Instituto Jurua

The giant arapaima, the largest scaled freshwater fish in the world, reaching up to 3meters in length and 200kg in weight, has played a central role in feeding Amazonian people for centuries. Unfortunately, due to overfishing and habitat fragmentation, wild populations of arapaima have been decimated. Through the integration of scientific research and traditional knowledge, Instituto Juruá is determined to save not only the arapaima but also other threatened species, including manatees, giant otters, giant turtles, and black caiman, and the livelihoods of rural communities in Amazonia who depend on the rivers.
