Giant Anteaters and Giant Armadillos

ICAS

The giant armadillo is unique to South America, found in the Pantanal, Amazon, Cerrado, and Atlantic Forest biomes. Discreet and nocturnal, it spends much of its time digging deep burrows which play a crucial role in ecosystem balance, offering refuge to hundreds of species. Unfortunately threatened with extinction due to habitat loss and fragmentation, ICAS’s Giant Armadillo Conservation Program in Brazil works to protect the giant armadillo and conserve its biome, combining the efforts of communities, rural landowners, the government, and partner institutions.
