Sea Otter Fund

The Sea Otter Fund’s vision is to restore sea otters along their historical U.S. Pacific Coast range.

Securing a Future for Sea Otters

Sea otters embody pure joy as they frolic in waves and gather in tight-knit groups called “rafts.” Once abundant from Baja California across the north Pacific Rim to Japan, sea otters were nearly hunted to extinction for their fur. Today, they inhabit some areas of their historical range but are still absent from a substantial portion of the U.S. Pacific Coast.

As a keystone species, sea otters provide multiple benefits to nearshore ecosystems, including helping maintain the health of kelp and seagrass systems, promoting biodiversity, and improving resilience to the effects of climate change. Their story must turn from one of loss to one of hope, as restoring their populations is vital to the health of ocean ecosystems throughout the Pacific Coast.

The Sea Otter Fund (SOF) is focused on restoring this remarkable species and the vibrant coastal ecosystems they call home. Your support addresses a critical restoration opportunity with cascading benefits for marine ecosystems, biodiversity, and climate resilience.

Support Sea Otters

As WCN’s first marine Wildlife Fund, SOF is a groundbreaking venture. Join us in writing the next chapter for sea otters. Together, we can set the stage for an incredible story of restoration.

SOF’s Value to Sea Otter Conservation

Research and feasibility studies confirm that reintroducing sea otters along areas in their historical range is a way to achieve the vision of restoring sea otters and improving the health of ecosystems where they live. WCN stands ready to support and help coordinate these efforts through the SOF by focusing on three key priorities.

Collaboration

Convene conservation groups, scientists, Tribal nations, government agencies, and communities to develop solutions that advance sea otter restoration and are aligned with local community priorities.

Scientific Research and Planning

Advance critical scientific research and technical planning to lay the groundwork for successful sea otter reintroduction.

Transparency

100% of your donation goes directly to conservation action, not overhead costs.
