Elephant societies are complex. They are emotional. They are bound together by deep and lasting memories. That’s why we often say, “Elephants Never Forget.”
Yet, we seem to have forgotten elephants.
Today, 30,000 elephants are killed every year for nothing but human greed for their tusks, and society has stood by. Now it is only human generosity that will save them.
Save the Elephants and the Wildlife Conservation Network established the Elephant Crisis Fund to address this slaughter. The Elephant Crisis Fund sends 100% of every donation (no overhead) to the best ideas and most urgent actions on the ground that will stop elephant poaching and the trafficking and demand for their ivory. The ECF funds ideas—not institutions—such that any effective organization fighting for elephants’ future can receive funding, after careful vetting by Save the Elephants for their impact and efficiency. The Fund to date has raised and granted more than $8 million on a path to $15 million to end the ivory crisis. On September 9th, with dedicated celebrity, influencer, media, and corporate partners, we will launch a new online campaign to show, through support to the Elephant Crisis Fund, that we will never forget elephants.
Traditionally, what do we do when we want to remember something? We tie a knot. We tie a string around our finger to keep something fixed in the forefront of our thoughts. We tie ribbons to remember those we’ve lost or soldiers at war. Knots are a huge trend in Fashion, and Fashion has huge influence on society. This autumn influencers from inside and outside the fashion industry will help us tie knots to show that we will never forget elephants. The “Knot On My Planet” campaign is a war cry response to current realities like “An elephant killed every 15 minutes!” or “30,000 elephants killed every year!”… #KnotOnMyPlanet!
#KnotOnMyPlanet is a cutting edge effort to raise donations for the Elephant Crisis Fund led by its global ambassador, supermodel Doutzen Kroes, and supported by a league of other influencers ranging from Leonardo DiCaprio, to Adrien Brody, to Robin Wright, to Pearl Jam, to name a few. Tiffany & Co, Snapchat, Edelman, Glamour, the Council of Fashion Designers of America and many others are joining in this push.
Launching during New York Fashion Week, the campaign asks everyone to donate to the Elephant Crisis Fund and tie and share on social media your own knot for elephants. Knot your shirt. Tie a scarf around your neck. Knot your necktie, or your bracelet, or your shoelaces. Knot your hair into a bun. Fashion is about expressing yourself, so there is no end to ways to show off your knot and declare that you will Never Forget Elephants.
So we hope you will join us.
